No-Glow vs Infrared: Which Trail Camera for NZ Pest Control?
One of the most common questions we get from conservation groups, trap line managers, and pest controllers is: does it matter what kind of night vision a trail camera uses? The answer, especially for pest control work in NZ, is yes — it matters a lot.
Here's a plain-language breakdown of the difference between no-glow and standard infrared cameras, and why it should influence which camera you choose for your project.
How Trail Camera Night Vision Works
All trail cameras take photos in the dark using LED illumination — a brief flash of light the moment the camera's PIR sensor is triggered. What varies between cameras is the wavelength of that light.
Standard infrared cameras use LEDs in the 850nm wavelength range. These emit a visible red glow when they fire — faint, but visible. You've probably seen it: a subtle red flash from a camera mounted on a tree. Animals can see this too.
No-glow cameras (also called Black Flash cameras) use 940nm LEDs. At this wavelength, the light is outside the visible spectrum — there's no glow at all.
Why No-Glow Matters for Pest Control
For standard game monitoring — checking for deer or pig movement across an open trail — either type of camera will do a reasonable job. But for pest control, where you want accurate, undisturbed data near trap sites, the type of illumination makes a real difference.
Possums are light-sensitive and highly alert to changes in their environment. Once they associate a location with a red flash, they'll start to avoid it — which means your camera stops giving you accurate data, and more importantly, animals may avoid the trap site altogether. Stoats and ferrets are similarly wary.
What About 'Invisible' Infrared Claims?
You'll sometimes see cameras marketed as 'invisible infrared' that are still using 850nm LEDs. This can be misleading — there's a meaningful difference between reducing the visible glow and eliminating it entirely. When you're choosing a camera specifically for pest control, look for cameras explicitly labelled as 'no-glow' or 'Black Flash,' or cameras that specify 940nm LEDs. These are the ones where the flash is genuinely invisible.
